Headaches be damned… it’s time to start writing again.

Yeah… my last post was in May. I get it. Most of my posts any more are just updates on my livelihood and how I’m going to revive the blog at that particular time, I get it. However, I feel as if this time is different because I really am starting to, how should I say it, feel like a new person.

“Why?” You might ask. Good question. Let’s dive into it… shall we?

My last post… which feels like a lifetime ago… focused on my health and the uphill climb that I was facing. I also laid out plans that I more than failed on (big surprise there.) I just reread that post from May of this year and realized how different my life was then compared to now. It’s funny how a really bad health issue allows you to really reminisce on your life. In May, I was diagnosed with a borderline Chiari malformation with the possibility of brain surgery looming over my head. I wasn’t getting any sleep, personal relationships weren’t working out, I weighed a crap ton… the list goes on and on. Life choices and health problems plagued my being and I think everyone around me noticed it but didn’t want to say anything. That’s in the past.

December 2016. Today. Boy have things changed. Let me preface this by saying I am nowhere near 100% and continue the fight every day to become a better person. After 23 years of living, making lifestyle changes is extremely difficult.

Headaches are come and go. Nowhere near as bad as they were in the past. That is thanks to a great neurologist and me taking matters into my own hands. How? Exercise and diet. In May, when I first went to the neurologist, I weighed 234 pounds. That’s pretty hefty for a guy who is only 5’6”. I was a total couch potato who ate a lot of fast food and Chinese takeout. As of writing this, I try and get out and run a couple miles each day and have cut out junk food almost entirely (a little Chinese takeout here and there… because let’s be serious, that stuff is freaking delicious.) The result so far: I weigh 199 pounds. I have to go back to high school to find the last time I was under 200 pounds. That has had an impact on a lot of aspects of my life. I have more energy throughout the day, I can stay focused longer and, most importantly, I am able to manage my headaches and migraines more effectively.

What I’m doing is not groundbreaking in the weight loss department. If you are reading this and are thinking about taking the steps of losing weight, just go out and walk a couple miles each day. Try and reach 10,000 steps each day. You’d be surprised how much that does for you. If you want to know more about what I did, don’t be afraid to reach out to me. This has been so life changing for me that I want to help whoever I can even though I am nowhere near an expert on the topic.

Another thing that I’ve started to do on a daily basis is meditation. I won’t get into details on that other than it has also helped out a ton in my life. I use the app Headspace. Give it a try. You can do 10 days free and then subscribe. I do have a month subscription I can give away to whomever is first to want it. The app is wonderful and it only takes 10-20 minutes out of morning routine every day. Reach out and whoever is first to talk to me will get the free month. Try the ten days first to see if it’s something you’d like.

In terms of writing (and the reason for the post,) I have been doing many, many drafts of posts that  I thought would be good for CFDD which obviously never saw the light of day. They were really bad. I won’t let you read them. Most of them were focused on the election. As I would continue writing, I started to realize that I am not really being original, or bring my own flavor, to the topic. I was essentially rehashing something that someone more qualified and established was already saying. I decided the best way moving forward is to just embrace it and let it evolve however it may evolve. Posts are always in the works and most will never be published.

I always write about the day’s happenings in a notebook I keep by my bedside… which gave me an idea: put all that stuff in the blog. This will become my new “Frock Talk” from my college radio days but just in the written form. Yes, many people already do this and some do this on YouTube or other video platforms but I want to give my own spin on it and in the written form (which is kind of hard to come by these days.) I I want to talk about whatever stories I find interesting, give my take on them and talk about why that story may or may not matter in whatever context that may be.  That’s the plan starting December 12, 2016. The title of the series (?) hasn’t been figured out yet. It may turn into a video thing in conjunction with the written post if I can find an efficient way to do it.

I will also be doing longer form stuff as well. I have my schedule figured out (for now) and figure I can do the writing thing effectively on a daily basis. Whatever else comes of it is anyone’s guess at this point.

As always, I stay fairly active on Twitter @ryanfinfrock. That’s also where I will be pulling my stories from the day from and writing down the ones I think are the best. I am excited for the future and being able to finally be able to write more effectively. It’s all fun for me and whoever reads it is just an added bonus. Send me tweets on story ideas or whatever. I can’t wait to get things going.

I’ll also be working on the formatting of the site more… it’s still kind of a mess.

Oh yeah… this blog thing is still happening

My last post was in October of 2014. That is quite a long time between posts. So the obvious question becomes: What the hell happened? I will answer that question… but let me start by saying some other things. All I ask is that you excuse typos and such. You’ll understand why in a bit.

Cheap Five Dollar Dress has been something that I think about almost on a daily basis. How can I make it better? Would X topic be good to write about? Should I finally fix the layout and CSS problems with the site? Should I care that not many people actually read this thing?

I’ve had a blog for almost 8 years dating back to an old blog that I had on Blogger (I’ve searched high and low… I can’t seem to find where that thing is now.) Blogging was always something that I used as a form of release therapy to allow me to vent about center issues that bugged me. It functioned well in that regard. As my writing evolved, I started writing about more topics. My trips to the Apple Store are by far my most popular posts that I have written. I found that simply talking about a life experience with added personality is what many people enjoy reading. That’s when I started to find my style of writing. It turned out to be a blend of humor, sarcasm and seriousness when the situation warranted. I had professors who ended up reading what I wrote and were curious about my thoughts on certain issues. I had my (in)famous college radio talk show Frock Talk where I expounded on topics that I covered here on the blog. That’s where I really started to find my political voice.

Politics is a weird thing with me. I love politics but I also hate that I love politics. However, through my college (and even in my high school) career, I found that not many people my age really cared about politics because everyone felt that nothing really mattered to them. I wanted to try and be a voice for people my age and try and tell them that these things do matter and have repercussions down the road. That became the focus of Frock Talk for much of its run. When the show started, the Occupy Wall Street thing was going on. If you’ve read, heard or know me, you know how I feel about that little part of history. I won’t go into it again…because that dead horse has been beaten enough.

Frock Talk had a decent run of a couple years. I eventually had to end it because of work and school commitments. I still kept in touch with those at the radio station and always thought of getting back on the airwaves (especially now during this 2016 election because…that’s a thing.) Once Frock Talk ended, Cheap Five Dollar Dress kind of faded into the background. I would post something every once and a while but the my inner passion really wasn’t there like it was when I did Frock Talk. So it continued to fade.

That brings us to today.

Since October of 2014, I’ve graduated from college (I heard it is a big achievement of some kind) with a degree in Electronic Media and Broadcasting and Political Science. That is probably the biggest positive to have happened. I also took a pretty awesome trip to Washington D.C.

Then there’s the downside.

It took me well over 4 days to finally finish this blog post. Not because of laziness, not because of work and not because of social commitments. To really understand what has happened, you need to know that I’ve had concussions… and quite a few of them.

The first one happened in the 6th grade when I was playing basketball. I was running down the court, lost my balance and slid headfirst into a wall. I was extremely lucky that day. I could have easily of been paralyzed and unable to type these words that you read right now. A 6th grader shouldn’t have to have a big life lesson like that at that age. That was the first of many concussions that carried through high school. I had to give up high school sports as a sophomore out of my own safety. New information about the long term effects of concussions really got to me and I felt that it was time to really start to look at my college and professional future. So I gave up football and lacrosse (although I still coached grade school lacrosse throughout my high school days) and turned to more broadcasting-centered activities.

So, back to today.

A couple months ago, I started getting consistently bad headaches. Headaches that won’t go away. Headaches that have a sort of baseline pain and spike in severity at random times. This has made it hard to focus on some of the things that I care about. A couple of those things are reading and writing. Two big necessities when blogging and two big necessities in my life. They also caused problems in my personal life. I became very irritable. I didn’t want to talk to anyone or see anyone. My mood began change quite frequently. I started to believe that it was me against the world. It affected me and I really believe that it affected those close to me and those that I care deeply about (whether they know about it or not.) The doctors said that the cause of these consistent headaches could be the concussions that I’ve had (and probably the most likely cause) but they cannot say with absolute certainty. All they can help with is managing the symptoms that I’ve had. I consider myself fortunate because there was a point where the doctor said that brain surgery was a possibility. I have no problem admitting that that scared the living crap out of me. I lost what little sleep I was already getting to the though of having brain surgery.

So obviously, it takes a long time for me to gather my thoughts and type words to screen. I am forced to take numerous breaks, look at nothing and just zone out to get back into the zone. I know, it’s weird to say, but that’s what happens and now you know what the hell happened to me and Cheap Five Dollar Dress.

So, enough of all of that “Debby-Downer” crap. Time to focus on what’s ahead (both in life and Cheap Five Dollar Dress.)

I’m going to try my hardest and try to post a new story at least once a week. Of course, there are a number of variables at play there, but that’s the goal. I still don’t care about how many people will end up reading it or what kind of impact it will have. It it has a positive impact and there are a lot of eyes that read it… great! But if the negative happens, I could not care less. This is fun for me.

I’m currently researching and drafting a post about the Facebook debacle about blacklisting conservative news sites from its “Trending News” feature. I won’t spoil the post but here are a couple thoughts: Facebook is free to do what it wants and the government shouldn’t step in and make them change their ways. If people are unhappy with what Facebook did (if it actually happened) then get off the site and find another social media site to go to. Let the market decide if Facebook is in the right or wrong not the government.

That’s just part of what I plan on writing about in the near future on the topic.

Also, as I alluded to earlier, the 2016 Election is a thing and I have some thoughts on it! A lot of thoughts. If you follow me on Twitter @ryanfinfrock you know what a lot of those feelings are.

I’ve also been doing as much research as I can on my own on the true impact of the media on politics. Is it as big of deal as people say it is? Is the media to blame for Donald Trump? Is the media giving all candidates a fair shot? These are the type of things that I’ve been looking into and trying to find answers to. Some of the stuff has been fascinating. Look forward to some of that stuff in the future.

I want to do a podcast. In what capacity, I don’t know yet… but I consistently think of ways to make it work. I did a podcast for a website called APGNation for a little while. We talked about video games and such. It was a lot of fun. You can listen to the last episode I did right here.

The CSS and layout of the site is kind of jacked up right now. I changed the format a while back and really haven’t taken the time to fix it. I plan on doing that over the course of the next few months.

Okay… I think it’s time to wrap this baby up, I’m nearly at 1,500 words. This post was hard for me to write for many, many reasons and is not the normal writing that I normally do on here. However, it is something that I felt that I needed to write about and to just get writing again. This is a new beginning. I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Look Here! More Apple Stuff!!!

Well, here we go again! Another Apple event and another blog post of me talking about the Apple event. I find that talking about Apple products is real easy to do and can lead to some interesting discussions. So let the Apple fanboy-ing begin!

In regard to the new iPads, a much expected feature, Touch-ID, is now on the new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3. This was possibly the biggest given coming into the event today. I recently was able to use Touch-ID with my new iPhone 6 for the first time and it does make a huge difference. I wish my iPad Air 1 had it, it’s really my only gripe about my iPad. Perhaps the feature I am curious to see in action is the removal of the air gap. The air gap is the space between the glass and the actual display. It is meant to help protect the display from damage. With the removal of this air gap, it (in theory) will provide better response times and a much better display while making the iPad thinner. My iPad Air is already extremely thin, so having a thinner iPad is kind of mind-boggling. I’ve already seen numerous tweets questioning how easy it is for the new iPad to bend.

What I found interesting is how Apple treated the unveiling of the new iPad Mini. It has all of the functions of the iPad Air 2 in a smaller size. However, it does make sense since the introduction of the iPhone 6 Plus with is only about 2 inches smaller and has more functions. It’ll be interesting how Apple treats the iPad Mini going forward and how much they plan on using the iPhone to phase it out. Because for some reason, people really like bigger phones… people are nuts.

Also, PLEASE STOP TAKING PICTURES WITH YOUR IPADS!!!! I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!! YOU ALL LOOK LIKE IDIOTS!

One thing that was missing that some people were expecting was the introduction of an iPad Pro. Basically, this would be a 12-inch iPad. This never made sense to me until I started seeing how Microsoft was able to make it work with its Surface 3 tablet. I could see Apple taking a page out of Microsoft’s playbook and combining the iPad and Macbook Air into one product. It may give Microsoft a victory but I feel Apple would be able to make their iPad Pro much functional and user friendly. I expect Apple to unveil something like that in the future.

This picture doesn't do the display any justice.
This picture doesn’t do the display any justice.

Apple has always been at the forefront of technology when it comes to their Mac products. The Macbook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro has always continued to create new ways for users to experience the desktop. When I bought my first Macbook Pro, a Mid-2012 Retina model, it was unlike anything I have ever used and I was immediately a fan of Apple products going forward. Today, Apple is making it very hard to not buy a new iMac. The new iMac features a 5K display. A fully-functional computer with a 5K display, all starting at $2499. This is an insanely good bargain if you know anything about displays and the costs of other Mac products. Even 4K displays are going for at least 3 grand. This was by-far the best news of the day from Apple. Most people go goo-goo over iPhones and iPads, I prefer to see what Apple reveals in its desktop/laptop line. However, a 2GB GPU for that display is worrying me a little bit. I’m not sure how well that GPU can handle the work load it will need to endure. I priced a 5K iMac with a 4GB GPU and 16GB of RAM and came out to just over $3,000. If you edit a ton of photos and video, and don’t want to work on a trash can (See Mac Pro,) this is the bomb.

Apple Pay is something that interests me, but with all those security risks around, I’ll wait for it to be used a few days or weeks before I decide to start using. I also don’t know if it will be widely available in my area.

yosemite

OS X Yosemite was something that I’ve been excited about since it was announced. Being able to answer phone calls and send SMS messages is a cool feature. Also, being able to start work on my Mac and moving it over to my iPad or iPhone will be a very handy feature, especially for being a college student. It also makes the interface more iOS7-like and notification center supports widgets. At the time of this posting, I am downloading Yosemite. I’ll have a review after I play around with it for a little bit.

It was a beautiful day in nerd paradise. iPhone 6 and OS X Yosemite reviews are in the works. Stay tuned here to cheapfivedollardress.com and follow me on Twitter @ryanfinfrock.

I’m also following the #gamergate situation pretty closely. This internet grassroots movement has received a lot of press recently. I’m working on something for that too.

Bent Smartphones are nothing new, but since it’s an iPhone, everyone pays attention

So, I can hear the arguments now: “Android phones don’t have this problem.” “This is just another reason to not go with Apple!” “Android phones don’t bend!” Just read this post and reserve judgement to the end.

STOP THE PRESSES! We just figured out that when you put an iPhone 6 in your pocket, it can bend! We need to let everyone know!!

If this news were anything.. well… new, it may be a bigger deal than it actually is.

The fact of the matter is that bent smartphones, not just iPhones, have a history of bending.

Take a look (Special thanks to Buster Hein for the images):

Here is the Blackberry Q10:

blackberry

The HTC EVO:

broken-evo-1

Even the much older iPhone 4:

iphone4bent-640x360

The Sony Xperia:

sonyexperia

And Apple’s biggest rival: Samsung Galaxy S4:

P1020486-640x480

So why all of the sudden do bent smartphones make the news? Well, I believe the news comes from the Apple brand. It goes without questioning that the Apple brand comes with a certain intrigue and expectation. There’s a reason why millions of people tune in from around the world to watch Apple unveil their latest creation. They have come love the products that Apple comes out with. They love the quality and operation of the tech. When something wrong happens.. people take notice.

So this news is a testament to the Apple brand. Smartphone have a history of bending, but it took the latest iPhone (granted much thinner than previous iterations) for people to actually make the issue mainstream. The Apple brand is truly the most powerful name in technology.

How widespread this issue is… who really knows. Look for bending tests to become a main component when it comes to reviewing new smartphones.

Also, don’t be stupid and put the phone in the back pocket of your jeans.. you’ll sit on your phone… and it will bend and break… duh.

I didn’t want to make this a post about the iOS vs Android battle, nothing really comes from those arguments. I simply wanted to let it be known that bent smartphones have been happening for some time now.

As phones continue to get thinner and thinner, this problem will continue. You know what might help? Stop making smartphones so damn big. This “phablet” fad needs to end. You want a big, mobile screen? Get a tablet.

ISIS, Ray Rice, iPhones,Education and nudes – A match made in heaven

Ahh… time for some release therapy.

It has been quite some time since I’ve been able to sit down and properly vent about the things that have been happening in our world today. A lot has happened, so let’s get to it.

ISIL, ISIS, Islamic State or whatever they call themselves these days continues to threaten the United States by making beheading videos public to the world. Two of these individuals are journalists. This fact hits a little close to home for someone like me who works with some phenomenal journalists and may be one someday. The fact that certain individuals are willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of the story and making sure that we are up to date on what is happening in other parts of the world is admirable. Now, for clarification, I am not comparing journalists to the armed forces fighting in the same areas, those people are a different breed.

Now, what would I do in this situation? I would send troops over and let the Islamic State know that when you mess with Americans, we will come at you and make you regret ever challenging America. Now, I know it is not as simple as that, but as someone who feels personally offended by the beheadings, my bias really shows (of course, what would Cheap Five Dollar Dress be without my bias?) The Islamic State is the biggest terrorist organization in the world, it’s time to show them their place in the world, which is no place in the world.

Switching gears, the NFL tried to show that it cares about women for more than just the month of October (Breast cancer awareness month.) with the indefinite suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. The NFL is making a mockery of itself throughout this entire ordeal. I’m sure you all know about the situation now, so I won’t bother with the details. I only have one question, a question that has been brought up many time before: Why didn’t the NFL ever get this full video?

Not smiling so much anymore...
Not smiling so much anymore…

We also know, in the NFL, that it is safer to beat your fiancee than to smoke pot (i.e. Josh Gordon.) I’m sure feminists are having a field day with that… which leads to another question I have: What the hell does feminism mean anymore? Seriously, I continue to hear different definitions of what people believe ‘feminism’ is to the point where I’m wondering if it’s a real thing. Someone, please enlighten me.

Also, his then fiancee is now his wife. She stand by him through this whole ordeal. Those are the facts… do with them as you please.

The iPhone 6 was announced today, so today is an official ‘nerd holiday’ for myself. Two iPhones, a 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch. Do you have an iPad? If you answered “yes” then don’t bother with the 5.5 inch iPhone. The phone looks a lot like leaked images that have been coming out the past few weeks. Faster processor, better image taking, better video. It’s what you expect from an iPhone in a fast, slimmer casing.. which is perfect. It is a good looking phone that will do what I need it to do faster, easier, and better. So I’ll be getting one (a 4.7 inch) next month when my contract is up.

Also, as I near the end of my college career (graduation in May 2015!) I have been faced with the question of “Is college worth the investment?” I haven’t really thought about this until people started asking me. I did some research on it (watching people’s opinions on the matter on YouTube.) and I found the results to be mainly negative. This proved to be a real head scratcher for me. I find college to be well-worth the investment in both time and money. I’ve learned what I want to know and more in the field that I am trying to get into, made some good network connections and made some good friends. That’s what college is all about right? Well, to some people, if you don’t have a job right out of college, you should get your money back (WTF?)

Language warning!

This kind of goes back to the entitlement issue that I have talked about NUMEROUS times before on CFDD and my late radio show. What this guy likes to talk about centers around not having a useful degree and therefore wanting a full college refund. However, what I’ve learned in college is that there is a constant need for adoption and adaptation of new ways of living. It’s no secret that our world is changing at a very fast rate, so fast that people are having a hard time keeping up with it. (More on this in a little bit.) It is up to the individual to learn new technologies based off the knowledge they know about the old ways of doing things. If you can’t adopt, then you really didn’t learn anything in college. Also, networking is well worth the investment alone. One of the first days of college, a professor told the class that it is not what you know, but who you know. Tell me this isn’t true? I took that to heart and made some great contacts in my field. It’s lead to a couple jobs and a couple freelance gigs, all while I am still a student. If you feel as though your college education isn’t worth it, you simply are not trying hard enough.

I alluded to people’s knowledge of technology earlier. This leads me to my final thought of this post: Celebgate, or “The Fappening” as social media has come to know it as. This, of course, is the leaked nudes of celebrities such as Kate Upton and Jennifer Lawrence. iCloud, Apple’s cloud storage application,  was the center of this controversy. What my main point about this is that people do not know how new tech (cloud storage, in particular) actually works. Cloud storage is data wirelessly transferred to a bank of hard drives somewhere else, you have no idea where this is actually stored. So somewhere between those two points, it may be easy for someone to intercept it, which is what happened in this case. Technology is moving so fast that people don’t have time to take a break and learn what is new. It’s a challenge, especially those who are immigrating to the digital world. It’s definitely a problem that needs to be fixed, otherwise we have more instances such as “The Fappening.” What baffles me is that people are talking about cloud storage as if it is an actual cloud hovering over you. I really have no clever line to put here, I think that statement is its own punchline.

Privacy in the digital age requires much education. It first starts with being personally responsible for what you are taking pictures of and knowing where those might end up. That is only one step, but a big step to making progress in privacy in the digital age.

That’ll wrap things up for this post, which may be my longest ever. I’ll try and update things here as I have time to do so. In the mean time, leave a comment here or tweet me @ryanfinfrock.

The written word is dying…

Maybe if this post were a video, more people would get the message. Also, no, there will be no pictures on this post.

This is a trend across all media that has me scared. More and more websites are shifting their focus from writing to video broadcast. I believe the reasoning is that more people will ‘click’ on a video review than a written review. It’s easier to digest the material and there is something to look at while getting the message. This, apparently, is a big enough thing to phase out writing, and I really don’t like that.

Writing is just as much of an art form as video and I would argue it is has a deeper impact. But that is another post for another day.

This may seem a little ironic, but I’m a video guy. It’s what I’m majoring in. I love video. I work with it almost every day and I know the impact it has on our daily lives. We turn on our TVs in the morning and check the morning news, chat with relatives far away via Skype, videotape your child’s first steps. It has its place in our lives and continues to grow into a more vital part of our regime. However, is it enough to phase out jobs where people write for a living?

This gets me to the main reason for why I am writing (and for the first time in some time.)

One of my favorite websites, Gamespot, just recently laid off a few of its employees. The reason? Well no reason was given, but there has been a trend in the video game market (and the interwebs in general) that points to a rise in video content thanks to sites as YouTube and Twitch (Twitch is an online streaming service where people and broadcast their games to a worldwide audience.) Google (which owns YouTube) has been at the forefront of this trend and recently purchased Twitch for a measly one billion bucks. So this trend is undeniable. Although sites like Gamespot have embraced video content, they still had a decent amount of written reviews, news, etc. Apparently it was too much to continue to hold up the amount of employees at Gamespot. So they laid off a few of their employees because of it. Is it the company’s (in this case, CBS Interactive) fault? I don’t think so, I believe it’s the consumer.

Scripps also recently ditched it’s entire newspaper division to focus on broadcasting. So it’s not just the internet, it’s across all forms of media.

So, how does writing stay relevant? Well, the short answer is: it can’t. Well, it can, but it relies on the consumer. Unfortunately, the consumer wants these YouTube videos and streams of the game being played over reading an article about the product. You could make the argument that the two can co-exist which I completely agree with. However, how often do YOU read the description of the videos on YouTube?

I obviously love the written word. I believe much can be interpreted from a well-written article. Character can show just as much in a written article as a video. However, I believe that the written word is something that is dying a slow death as we go more towards podcasting, audiobooks, video content, etc. The fact of the matter is that our lives are so fast anymore that no one bothers sitting down and reading a newspaper or read a book. They’ll play an audiobook in the car, or turn on a news podcast. Writing is going the way of the dinosaurs. It’s an art form that is struggling to stay relevant. Although there are some places where it will continue to thrive (let’s not forget, video content often follows something that the creator wrote.)

I will continue to write on a daily basis because it is something that I truly care about. If not for writing, this blog would not exist, nor would my passion for news. Hell, I don’t think my passion for video would be as strong if it weren’t for writing.

Now, that I conclude this post, the question is: how many actually read all the way down to this point? This illustrates the problem because I don’t believe I should have to ask that question. Fact is, people look at the length of an article and go “Eff this!”

Luckily, I don’t have to cater to a certain demographic because I don’t get paid for this, so I can do things the way I want, and the way that I believe that it should be.

“… When I’m free to be just what I wanna be”

My apologies for making you watch that video… but damn is that catchy… and terrible.

You may have noticed that they layout of CFDD has changed a little bit. This is the new, but temporary layout of my blog until my new layout is finalized (Something that I’ve worked on myself.) I’m excited to get that up and give my blog a new flavor and add more content.

As soon as that goes live (No date set yet) I plan on posting more on pretty much everything I want. I’ve also been experimenting with some podcast stuff which I’m real excited about.

I know all of this is ambitious, but it’s almost summer vacation for this college student (just one more year left of college life!) but I hope it all comes together perfectly.

Anyway, how about my take on a few headlines:

A controversial film covering the life of notorious abortionist Kermit Gosnell is trying to crowdfund. They quickly raised $1.4 million (which broke some kind of record apparently.) They plan on looking on this man’s methods and cover the lack of media coverage in this case. They claim they were more focused on issues such as Jodi Arias and not a mass murderer (Of course, your opinion may vary.) But I’m curious, here’s a link to the Indiegogo campaign of the Gosnell movie and let me know what you think of it.

I’m missing a clever line to describe Malaysian Flight 370.

Donald Sterling decided to hate on people who look like his girlfriend and is still a billionaire.

I thought I would come up with more headlines, but like Malaysia Flight 370, they’re gone.

Look for some more stuff in the future here on Cheap Five Dollar Dress. New layout, new features, new everything. I’m excited with how everything is coming together.

Michael Sam: Why equal rights doesn’t seem to be equal

Guy, I have an announcement to make: I’m straight.

In the wake of all of the hoopla surrounding Michael Sam probably becoming the first openly gay NFL player, it made me reflect on how the media and equal rights activists are approaching this situation.

ESPN is having a field day covering every possible angle to this story. They’ve interviewed Sam, coaches, NFL players, people who don’t agree with homosexuality, and their mothers. Through all of this, I can’t help but think: is this what the equal rights movement wants? Aren’t we passed the point where we make a big deal when some celebrity or athlete comes out? Making these individuals special by giving them increased coverage doesn’t make this movement equal. If the average joe came out as homosexual, shouldn’t he or she get the same coverage? If it were, when someone announced that he or she is straight, they should receive the same amount of coverage. Am I the only one that sees the sense behind this?

Now, I’m not bashing on Michael Smith, or homosexuality. You can have your opinion, and I’ll have mine. But when talking equal rights, shouldn’t it be…well, equal? Putting a man on a pedestal for being the first to come out (when, undoubtedly, there are more out there, including current players) doesn’t do much to promote the movement, especially when the majority of people speaking out are in favor of Sam’s gender preference. It basically just states, “Hey, I’m here, look at me!”

I’m curious to see what people think about this issue. Send a tweet my way @ryanfinfrock and let’s debate it. Let’s enlighten each other.

This was just a short post to ignite debate. Let’s me know what you think and this may spark a bigger post in the future.

Duck Dynasty: It tastes like chicken

Oh how the hate is flowing in America today!

Remember a while ago when Chic-Fil-A was under fire for donating money to organizations to which many took offense to? Remember how Chic-Fil-A was considered homophobic and every other name in the book? Remember ‘Support Chic-Fil-A Day” where lines at Chic-Fil-A’s across the country were extremely long with people showing their support for Chic-Fil-A? Yeah, that same thing is happening again, but this time, we’re not eating chicken; we’re indulging in some duck!

People tend to miss the point when it comes to issues such as this. If you haven’t heard about Phil Robertson’s suspension from the mega-hit “Duck Dynasty” because he believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, and his tongue-in-cheek joke of how he prefers vagina over a male anus,  then get out from under your rock.  That’s about the gist of what you need to know to follow along with my writing.

This is  not about gay rights, just as the case was with Chic-Fil-A. People are completely focused on the fact that Phil doesn’t agree with the homosexual lifestyle because he is a man of faith. You can agree with him or disagree with him, that’s okay. However, let’s respect one’s opinion and their right to speak it. With Chic-Fil-A, everyone seemed to be focused on the fact that droves and droves of people showed up to support Chic-Fil-A for their stance, which some took to mean that those customers have the same stance as Chic-Fil-A.

No.

These people who are up in arms about Chic-Fil-A, and now Phil Robertson, are the ones who cannot seem to get it through their heads that people may have a different opinion than the one of their own. So what’s the only conclusion? Well, GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) says that advertisers should stop airing ads during Duck Dynasty and that Phil Robertson should be punished. It worked. A&E suspended Phil from episodes of Duck Dynasty for the foreseeable future.  Here is the statement from GLAAD:

“Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe. He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans — and Americans — who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples.

“Phil’s decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families.

So, someone who doesn’t have a popular opinion should be punished. This is the big factor for me. How come there was never a discussion after these comments? Why should Phil be punished so quickly without a discussion where there may be hopes of an understanding. Have Phil sit down with GLAAD and discuss their differences. Isn’t that what adults should do? Or should GLAAD bully A&E into punishing Phil and therefore, punishing A&E.

Duck Dynasty is, without question, the top rated program on A&E. For many, Phil is the heart and soul of that show. I, personally, have only seem a few episodes of the show, but enough to get what the message of the show is trying to convey. It’s a family built around Christian values, who base their livelihood around their faith. It’s a family which millions of viewers have fallen in love with. Suspending Phil is like having a member of your close family pass away. There will be a hole that you can never fill back up. What happens to the show now? Quite frankly, I’m not sure if anyone knows.

Once again, this is not about gay rights. If you believe this situation, along with Chic-Fil-A, centers around gay rights, you are completely missing the point. Whether you believe in gay marriage or you believe in traditional marriage, you need to understand how the other side feels. Suspending Phil because of his remarks solves nothing. It merely makes the divide between views that much bigger. Simply having a discussion between those of opposite views can have a profound impact on understanding the other side.

But maybe I just live in an ideal world.

The life of a novice storyteller.

I got the idea for this blog post from a very talented writer that I work with. She talked about “a day in the life” for her at our place of employment. Check out her post and leave her some feedback. I give her some credit for the making of this post. Click here to check out her post. Also, be sure to follow her on Twitter @_tarad_

I am a very lucky individual.

Not many people can look at their lives and truly enjoy what they do for work. I consider myself a part of the lucky, fortunate, and appreciative few.

I have always loved the news. It is the most basic form of storytelling that reaches a very large audience. You are always looking and researching for the next big event to happen so you can be the first (and most accurate) to report it. Storytelling is an extremely important part of our lives, and the news is one of the main mediums to give us those stories.

I work at a Cincinnati news station where I work as a production assistant. What’s a production assistant? Basically, it is the ‘behind the scenes’ job in the studio. I operate studio cameras, work the teleprompter, run scripts, and floor direct. It a very basic position that doesn’t pay much and is only part time (but with full-time hours.) With the low pay, you’d wonder why I would even take the job in the first place. However, it’s the people, the atmosphere, and the experience that is richer than any payment I could receive.

The people I work with are at the top of their game at all times. The anchors are people who have worked in the news industry for many years and could easily be blinded by their own celebrity. I was amazed at how down-to-Earth the anchors are and how they are very easy to talk to. This is something that you can’t help but have a great respect for. Too often, we hear about anchors being prima donnas and only care about how they look on TV and shoving everyone else beneath them. This news station is not like that in any way. Also, as a current college student, they are my professors outside of the classroom. I get a hands-on look at the news business and see how it operates from the inside-out. That’s is something you can’t possibly learn in any classroom or textbook. The anchors, along with the other PAs, the producers, and everyone else are what make me continue to love what I do and realize that working in this industry is exactly what I want to do with my life (what specifically I want to do… that’s another story.)

As for the newsroom atmosphere, I want to quote a co-worker:

Amidst all of the wonderfulness, the station is very much like a casino. You get caught up in the hustle and bustle and distracted by all of the lights, but often lose track of time and your original intentions. Working six days straight is more full time than it is part time, but I find myself falling into the motions.

The newsroom can be a crazy place sometimes, but it can also be a dull place. I love it a lot more when it is crazy. When breaking news happens, crap can hit the fan extremely fast. People run around yelling expletives and on the phone for what seems like hours, trying to get the most up-to-date-information. When you work with people who are focused on getting the whole story, you develop a sense of pride of working for, and with, those who are some of the best in the field. Since we live in an age where ‘the media’ is often vilified for being… well… the media, I find extreme honor to work with those who stand for everything that news used to stand for in the age of people like Cronkite and Murrow. With every breaking news story, I learn a little more about the news gathering process and develop my journalistic ethics every step of the way (and also look at the whole industry in a completely different light.)

The experience is something that will carry me throughout the remainder of my college years and the real world. If I don’t find a job at my current station, I am set up for the possibility to work in any news station. The work, the people, and the atmosphere help me with  my journey  of life, which is still in its infancy.

Life is all about storytelling. We live as storytellers. Some are better than others. I am extremely lucky to work with some of the best storytellers in the news industry. I only wish I can one day be on the level as those who I look up to now. But with some hard work, maybe I can be the ultimate storyteller, like those who have been doing it for a number of years.

As with every story, this post has reached its inevitable end.
